Happy Lunar New Year!
It’s the year of the rabbit. My daughter’s sign. Maybe that portends some good fortune for the family. Because we need it!
Epic of Darkness #2 Pre-launch
I started working on the campaign for EoD #2 and the pre-launch page is now live. I highly recommend saving the campaign so you don’t miss it when it launches. Click HERE or the image below to go there now. Not later! NOW!!!!
These are the tentative specs of the book/campaign:
The campaign will probably launch on Thursday, March 16th.
The minimum goal will probably be set at $1000. But my true goal will be something like $3000 and 100 backers. So we need to significantly surpass the previous campaign.
The comic will be 4 stories and 36 pages, with the slim possibility of adding an additional story or prose piece.
The price of the physical book will probably be $8.
The basic digital reward will probably be $4.
The basic physical reward will probably be $12. That includes the cost of shipping. Since shipping averages $6, I’ll be losing money (or just barely breaking even) with the basic reward. This means I’ll have to do my best to motivate backers to consider the higher dollar rewards.
A few new offerings will be on the table this time, which includes the “Lady X” mini-bust, a winged dagger T-shirt and blemished copies of issue #1 for super cheap. I also wanted to offer some of Brian Azcurra’s original art pages but it seems he’s run into a snag with customs in Argentina. As it stands right now, I don’t know if he’ll ever be able to send them. Which sucks because I already paid him to ship them.
There will be an updated “Making Of” PDF with additional, new artwork and info related to stuff in issue #2.
Not everything from the issue #1 campaign will be available again. So some things from the first campaign will still be rare/exclusive.
I wanted to offer a 24 x 36 inch poster but the combined cost of printing and shipping would require me to charge something like $30 for one and I doubt anyone would be interested in that. But I’ll keep this idea in my back pocket as something to possibly offer in a future campaign.
Since no one opted for any of the variant covers I offered with issue #1, I decided that I’ll use them as future covers. And since I used Anem’s artwork for the back cover of issue #1, I thought it might be cool to use it for the front cover of issue #2. Then I would repeat that design concept for every issue, to make a sort of “cover progression” like this…
For those of you playing along, yes, whenever the series comes to an end, the back cover of the last issue will be the artwork from the front cover of issue #1.
Tishatsu Rangers Go!
I ordered a sample of the winged dagger t-shirt because I like to verify products before I ever offer them to anyone — I don’t want the headache of having to rectify a third-party’s poor quality control. Luckily, the shirt I got came out good. The graphic is sharp and the color is vivid, even though that might not be so apparent in this crappy pic. The only problem was that it had a strong glue smell. But that completely went away after a wash and the graphic was not affected. I’ll abuse it some more in the next few weeks to see how it holds up.
Book of Legend series
I’ve been thinking that I really should do more all-ages stuff — especially considering that I have kids and I’d like to share more of what I do with them. So I’m currently developing some new characters/stories that are more appropriate for kids and teens. And I think that emulating the EoD anthology format may be the best way to present them. But the stories would most likely all be self-contained and feature a consistent cast of characters, which might include “Dogface”, “Little Feet”, an anthropomorphic animal character, a martial arts character and a prototypical superhero-type character. That’s just what’s in my head right now, which could change drastically five minutes later.
Also, at the end of last year, I was introduced to a local group of artists that meets once a month. I might be able to work with some of them on this project. And since they’re local, I may be able to fast-track this and get something done this year. The next meet-up is in just a few days so I may have an update about this in the next newsletter.
